Spring sports are quickly gaining speed at Clemson as one of the busiest weeks of the year has arrived. With the addition of baseball and softball beginning, there are lots of upcoming games for Clemson athletics, including 14 home contests between Wednesday and Sunday.
Baseball:
Baseball season has arrived in Clemson, which unofficially declares the beginning of spring in Tigertown. Baseball is one of the top sports at Clemson, and this year’s team will look to make a run at the program’s first College World Series in 10 years. The Tigers are coming off a 35-26 season in 2019 that ended in the Oxford Regional. Clemson returns a number of starters on offense and in the pitching rotation, including junior infielder/outfielder Sam Hall, junior outfielders Bryce Teodosio and Bo Majkowski and sophomore pitchers Davis Sharpe and Spencer Strider. The Tigers will open up the season this weekend with a three-game series against Liberty at Clemson’s Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Friday’s opening day will begin at 4 p.m., while both weekend games will start at 1 p.m. All games, with the exception of Sunday’s matchup, will be televised on the ACC Network.
Softball:
Softball is officially underway in Clemson as the Tigers opened up their inaugural season this past weekend at the University of Central Florida’s Black and Gold tournament in Orlando, Fla. Clemson won its opening game over St. John’s, 6-2, securing the first ever win for the Tiger softball program. Despite losing its next three games, Clemson exploded in its final game of the tournament against St. John’s, defeating the Red Storm 19-9. The Tigers finished the tournament 2-3 and will now host their first ever home series this week against Western Carolina. Clemson will host the Catamounts on Wednesday with a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m., while game two is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. The action does not stop there as the Tigers will host the Big Ten/ACC Challenge this weekend. Clemson will play Maryland on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Tigers will then play Michigan State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. All games, with the exception of Saturday evening’s contest against Michigan State, will be televised on the ACC Network.
Men’s basketball:
The men’s basketball team had a tough week as the Tigers dropped contests to Virginia and Notre Dame. Sitting at 11-12 overall and 5-8 in conference play, Clemson has a huge week ahead as the Tigers travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night and host No. 5 Louisville on Saturday. Clemson needs to win at least one of its contests this week to avoid falling out of its current tie with Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech for tenth in the ACC standings. The game on Wednesday with Pittsburgh will tip off at 9 p.m., while the game against Louisville on Saturday will begin at 4 p.m. Both games will be televised on the ACC Network.
Women’s basketball:
The women’s basketball team dropped both contests last week, losing on the road to Virginia and to Boston College at home. The Tigers are currently in the midst of a six-game losing streak and sit nearly dead last in the ACC standings. Looking to turn things around during the final stretch of the season, Clemson will host two home games this week, both against teams also struggling to find their rhythm. The Lady Tigers will host Wake Forest on Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m. Thursday’s game against Wake Forest will be televised on the ACC Network.
Track & Field:
Coming off of a successful weekend at the South Carolina Invitational, Clemson Track & Field will return home this weekend to host the Tiger Paw Invitational. This is one of three meets left for the team before the first leg of the ACC Championships at the end of the month. This weekend’s event will last all day Friday and Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
Women’s tennis:
The women’s tennis team is back in action this weekend looking to build on their two-match win streak. The Tigers defeated Mercer and South Carolina State this past weekend to improve to 7-2 on the season. Clemson will travel to ACC opponent Virginia Tech on Friday before returning home to host another conference opponent in Wake Forest and nonconference opponent Western Carolina. Friday’s match will begin at 2 p.m. while Sunday’s matches will begin at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
Golf:
Men’s golf will be participating in the Puerto Rico Classic from Sunday through next Tuesday while the women’s team will be in Mexico for the IGJA Collegiate Invitational.
