College Avenue will be designed to allow for more accessible walking spaces.
The Clemson City Council approved design negotiations with an engineering firm to redesign College Avenue between Study Hall and TD’s at its meeting on Monday.
The proposed design changes include wider sidewalks, removal of on-street parking, removal of turn lanes and larger street trees from North Clemson Avenue to Old Greenville Highway. The contract is for SeamonWhiteside to complete the final design.
The planned streetscape improvements were outlined in the 2017 Clemson Downtown Corridor Study, which examined a possible revamp of College Avenue.
There are also two plans for bikes: one includes shared right of way with bikes mixed in with other traffic, while the other includes bike lanes with slightly narrower sidewalks, as discussed at the city council meeting.
The city council also approved negotiations for the design and construction of a redevelopment of the Clemson downtown police substation, which will be done in conjunction with the streetscape project by Hogan Construction.
The downtown police substation, across from 356 Sushi, will be redeveloped for various city services downtown. This redesigned building will include a city visitors center in addition to the police substation. There are also plans for other city services, such as storage for downtown events.
