"Jurassic Park" came alive in 3D.
Clemson World Cinema’s fall 2025 film series kicked off last Wednesday with a 3D screening of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic “Jurassic Park.”
The series is organized by students in WCIN 3990 tasked with organizing a program of films to screen throughout the semester. Titled “The Greats,” the fall 2025 film series consists of eight films, including a 35mm screening of Nobuhiko Obayashi’s horror classic “House,” alongside more recent releases like Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.”
The projector in Watt Auditorium has the power to display 3D visuals using innovative active 3D technology, and Clemson World Cinema’s Creative Inquiry class jumped at the opportunity to screen a film in 3D for the Fall Film Series.
At 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 10, students began to fill Watt Auditorium to watch “Jurassic Park.” After all attendees were seated, Justus Tanner, junior world cinema major, gave a brief introduction to the film, reminding the audience that the screening isn’t just an opportunity to watch a movie, but also a celebration of cinema. Tanner recalled being stunned by the film’s memorable visual effects and gripping story as a child, and finds it an equally rewarding experience as an adult.
Thanks to 3D glasses provided by the Watt Center, attendees were able to view “Jurassic Park” as if the events of the film were unfolding right in front of them. It was as if the dinosaurs were actually creatures that you could see and touch. Along with the 3D visuals, the sound system in Watt Auditorium contributed to an immersive screening that made you feel every stomp and roar from the 1993 classic.
A good student turnout for the event also contributed to a relaxed and engaging viewing experience.
“Jurassic Park” is one of my favorite films, and viewing it in 3D made me notice details that I had never given much attention to before, making the event all the more enriching. The entire experience amounted to a feeling that I was watching the movie for the first time again. This experience goes to show that the Clemson World Cinema program always finds a way to step up its game.
If you get the opportunity to watch a movie in 3D, please take it. Although it may seem like an obsolete and nearly extinct gimmick, seeing “Jurassic Park” reminded me why people love to watch movies in 3D.
All are welcome to attend the eight screenings in the series, with the next screening for the Fall Film Series being Jonathan Demme and Talking Heads’ concert documentary “Stop Making Sense,” on Sept. 24.
