Emily Brough played a critical role in Clemson's success against Syracuse, delivering the equalizing goal early in the matchup.
The Clemson women’s soccer team defeated Syracuse 2-1 on Sunday, marking the team’s first ACC victory of the season.
Clemson, 4-4-5, 1-3-2 ACC, traveled north to face the Orange on the road. The Tigers allowed Syracuse to take the lead early in the matchup. In the seventh minute, Mia Klammer struck for Syracuse, providing a 1-0 lead on a shot which was assisted by both Anna Rupert and Shea Vanderbosch.
However, Clemson remained calm, striking back shortly after in the ninth minute of the contest. This time, it was Emily Brough delivering the tying-kick, which was assisted by Jolie Jenkins and Anna Castenfelt.
The contest became defensive for a period of time after the thrilling start, as no more goals were scored until the 90th minute. As time was nearing expiration, Castenfelt fired the finishing blow, creating Clemson’s first lead of the day.
Clemson outshot the Orange by a large margin, leading in the category 31-10. They were also able to muster 13 shots on goal in comparison to Syracuse’s four. However, Orange goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch played her part in keeping the match close, tallying 11 saves in the afternoon.
The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday when they face SMU on the road. The matchup will begin at 7 p.m.
