Kylie Odetta, an indie musician from Greenville, performed at the Brooks Center Courtyard on Friday, Oct. 22 with the Dream Team band. The fall semester has brought many live events and performances back to Clemson University, and the crowd at Odetta’s concert was clearly thankful for it.
There are many wonderful musicians in this world but fewer good performers. To have them both in the same person is a rare phenomenon, one that Odetta has perfected. The show was engaging, entertaining and had me singing along to songs I was hearing for the first time.
When I heard that Odetta was coming to Clemson, I went and listened to a few of her songs in order to get a feel for her style. I enjoyed what I heard, my favorite of hers being “Under the Sun,” which she played during the concert. I was completely astounded by how much more impactful and impressive her voice and presence were live. The energy was perfect for the outdoor venue as the sun set.
Odetta’s show carried the audience through a story about growing up and chasing your dreams, enduring the struggles of that chase and the final bliss as you stand where you always wanted yourself to be. Odetta delves into her personal life as well, opening up and including the audience in her reason for singing. Her voice and lyrics lovingly deliver the truth of that struggle, carrying listeners to a place they can be more confident in their dreams.
As much credit as I give to Odetta, I have to also give credit to the band, The Dream Team. From the guitar and sax solos and the smooth transitions to the wonderful backing vocals, The Dream Team’s music filled the courtyard with magic.
Overall, Kylie Odetta and The Dream Team put on an absolutely amazing performance that I have to give a 10/10. By far my favorite song during the show was “Real.” While this was the last performance in her current tour, you can find Odetta’s music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. Odetta has a new album dropping in February of 2022, so be on the lookout for it! It most certainly won’t disappoint.
