Residents of the off-campus apartments at The Pier were asked to shelter in place after a chemical mix in a home emitted a potentially dangerous gas onto the property.
The incident was reported to occur around 8 a.m. this morning when first responders and hazmat handlers arrived at The Pier. One resident of the home that emitted the gas is hospitalized, according to Scott Krein, director of Oconee County Emergency Services.
“For precautionary reasons we had to close [the property] down,” said Krein to The Tiger. “For other residents, it is all good now. The home is not cleared.”
It is unclear currently what the chemical mix was, though Krein said that the chemicals were milder than originally reported.
As of noon on Thursday, residents are permitted to access the property but local authorities have asked that no visitors be allowed at this time, according to an email sent to residents from The Pier.
The Pier declined to comment further saying that they will communicate updates with their residents as they are made available.
Clemson Area Transit has suspended the bus route to The Pier until further notice.
Earlier in the morning, The Pier sent an email to residents two hours after first responders arrived on the property. The email asked those at home to shelter in place until further notice and others to stay away until the property is deemed safe for re-entry.
