During Saturday’s game against NC State, Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliot made the decision to start true freshman Will Shipley at running back.
Shipley had 11 carries for 36 yards against NC State. Unfortunately, in overtime, Shipley went down with a gruesome knee injury after blocking for quarterback DJ Uiagelelei, who ended up being tackled into Shipley’s extended knee.
Luckily, Shipley’s injury was not catastrophic. The Clemson coaching staff gave a 3-4 week timetable for Shipley’s return from what is being called a shin injury.
As Clemson looks ahead to its faceoff with the undefeated Boston College team, the running back room looks less than ideal. Sophomore Kobe Pace will take the helm as Clemson’s lead back, supported by freshman backup Phil Mafah, who will be looking to make the most of this rare opportunity. Fan-favorite Darien Rencher, now listed as Clemson’s third string back, will likely also see the field on Saturday.
Expect Shipley to return to his starting role once he recovers from injury as he is an extremely talented player and has been a favorite amongst coaches. Shipley made a great impression on the Clemson coaching staff, prompting praise from Head Coach Dabo Swinney.
“He’s not a guy that’s gonna wait till his senior year to be a leader. He showed up here as a leader, and he’s one of the most respected guys on this team already since he got here in January. Just his work ethic. Tremendous, tremendous work ethic and just how he carries himself is unique for a freshman,” said Swinney in Aug.
Sadly, Shipley’s promotion has adverse effects. Senior running back Lyn-J Dixon has entered the transfer portal after losing his starting job. Swinney discussed this news on his radio show, “…he graduates in December and [I’m] really proud of that and wish him well.”
