Food can bring people together, tell a story and inspire others. Active Culture is a new student-based publication at Clemson that is focused on everything involving food and is meant for food-enthusiasts. They aim to answer questions like, “how does food influence our relationships, bodies, and the environment?”, by providing insight into the current experiences people have with food through a variety of media. From mushroom hunting to dining hall experiences to recipes to eating disorders, they plan to cover any food-related topic you may be interested in. What sets Active Culture apart from other student-publications is their heavy focus on the design aspect of their works, which is reflected in the fact that they are blending different types of media into their publications. They will release their first publication in mid-September and release one every few weeks after, through the end of the semester.
Like most operations at Clemson, Active Culture had to modify their plans to an online format this semester. They will publish digitally this semester, with two articles being released every few weeks. Every issue, both online and physical, will vary, especially due to the design emphasis it has. In future semesters, they will release a physical copy of their magazine for students periodically. Due to the online format this semester, they will be incorporating a broad range of different types of digital media into their publications.
Active Culture is a part of the Clemson Food Collective (CFC); however, you do not have to be involved in or commit to the CFC to contribute. Students from all majors across all classes who have a passion for food in any capacity are welcome to contribute. The types of media that they are accepting entries for this semester include writing, poems, drawings, VR, animation, music, sculpture, and much more. These types of media may interest students across all majors at Clemson, and anyone who is interested should fill out the interest form at the end of this article. If you have an idea for a project, you can submit a soft proposal on the interest form and someone will contact you about your project. Even if you do not have a solid plan and are just interested in contributing, fill out the form, and a member of Active Culture will reach out to you and help you build and perfect an idea. They will also be accepting recipes for all experience levels of chefs and bakers. Any type of cuisine is accepted and encouraged since Active Culture is about the different types and cultures food takes on as well. They plan to run on a rolling-deadline schedule, meaning that there is not a high level of commitment; however, the earlier a project is submitted, the earlier it will be published.
In mid-September, Active Culture’s first issue will be up at http://activeculturemag.com/. Any students who are interested in contributing should fill out the interest form for Active Culture that can be found at tinyurl.com/active-culture. Any questions should be directed to Emma Sargent ([email protected]) or Ronnie Clevenstine ([email protected]).
