Honestly, it was only a matter of time. While the Clemson fan base appreciates all that Kelly Bryant has done as the starting quarterback for the team (14 wins, 28 total touchdowns), it seemed like his time as the de facto starter was nearing an end.
As soon as freshman phenom Trevor Lawrence stepped on campus, it was all people could talk about. He played side-by-side with Bryant in camp and kept pace which forced the coaching staff to consider him as a potential starter. It didn’t seem like the coaches would lean on a dual-QB system for too long, but for the first three games, two against lesser opponents, it seemed Dabo Swinney and his offensive coaches were holding steady on that course of action.
The Georgia Tech game changed that in a hurry. Bryant trotted out as the starter for the first two series, but produced poor results. After his second series, Bryant looked to be injured and Lawrence quickly replaced him. The freshman would finish with four touchdowns on the next six drives, with just 176 passing yards and a bad-luck interception.
Now that he has taken the reigns, it’s up to Lawrence to keep them. He has won the QB battle, but not the war.
