The Clemson men’s basketball team defeated Newberry with ease in an exhibition game in Littlejohn Coliseum on Wednesday night, taking down the Wolves 90-39.
From the opening tip, Clemson center PJ Hall was the Tigers’ go-to option, as he scored 10 of the team’s first 21 points of the game, shooting 4 for 5 from the field in the opening seven minutes. Hall finished with a team-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field in just 13 minutes of action.
Right behind Hall on the box score was forward Ian Schieffelin, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes of action. The junior also had two assists and two blocks on the night.
Syracuse transfer Joseph Girard III scored his first points as a Tiger, finishing with eight points on 3 for 7 shooting (2 of 5 from 3-point range).
Clemson’s starting lineup, comprised of Chase Hunter, Girard, Chauncey Wiggins, Schieffelin and Hall, scored 40 of the team’s 53 points in the first half as the Tigers ran out to a 53-27 lead.
From there, the Tigers turned to their bench, as every player on the team who dressed received playing time. Of the 15 players who entered the game for Clemson, 13 scored.
As a team, Clemson shot 53.6% (37 of 69) from the field and 11 of 32 from beyond the arc. The Tigers’ defense held Newberry to just 22.0% shooting from the floor and 3 of 23 from 3-point range.
On the injury front, Alex Hemenway did not dress as he continues to battle back from injury.
