Jack “Eggs” Eggemeyer was first introduced to hockey at age four when his family attended a Christmas party hosted by a family who had an outdoor rink. After watching a couple of kids skate around for a while, he decided that he also wanted to join in on the fun. Thus, his path to becoming a Clemson Tiger began.
Growing up in Chicago, Eggemeyer inherited his love for hockey from his father, who put him and his twin sister on skates as early as possible.
“I was immediately pretty hooked,” Eggemeyer said. “I was pretty conditioned into playing hockey… my dad grew up playing, and that’s what he wanted me to do, me and my twin sister. He put us in skates as soon as he possibly could. There are pictures of us skating at one or two years old.”
By the time he reached the tail end of his high school career, Eggemeyer decided Clemson was the perfect school for him.
“I wanted to do engineering,” he said. “I (toured) a bunch of schools. I went to a large high school, and I kind of wanted to get out of that area … not a lot of people went to Clemson, and it’s got a good engineering program. So I came here.”
It didn’t take much research for Eggemeyer to discover Clemson’s club ice hockey team since his dad made sure that every college he applied to had a program. During his time as a Tiger, Eggemeyer watched the very same program his dad introduced him to transform into something unrecognizable in the best way.
“I tried out my freshman year and I saw what (the program) was like and I thought, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this’ … It was not good,” he said. “Even from my junior year to now, I think the team now would beat the team from my junior year, 9-1. It’s insane how much the talent has really developed and how serious it’s taken now.”
Not only did Eggemeyer find his place at Clemson on the ice, but he also joined the club bass fishing team.
Following his graduation from Clemson, Eggemeyer plans to continue his research and obtain a Master’s degree. He hopes to work in a national laboratory of some kind in the future.
