College football has long been one of America’s most beloved traditions — especially in the South — but in recent years dressing for the games has become just as much of a spectacle as the event itself.
When I first arrived at Clemson, I was completely unprepared to dress for the tailgates and other events that go along with a home football game. I found myself rushing at the last minute to find stylish outfits and outfits for the themed games.
While you may not know exactly what you want to wear to every game, stocking up on some game day essentials to keep in your closet will be a total lifesaver.
For the first few games, it will still feel like summer in Clemson, so dresses, shorts and two-piece sets will be the most popular fashion choices. Anything orange, purple or white would be a perfect color choice. An occasional hint of pink is also a great option.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make with your game day outfit is leopard print. We tigers are very proud of our stripes, and you may even find yourself being mocked on Clemson’s Barstool social media pages if you’re caught in the wrong cat’s coat.
Death Valley has a clear bag policy, so make sure to find one to carry with you. Clear bags with customizable straps have become a staple in game day fashion. Accessories such as Clemson-themed earrings, necklaces and bracelets are the perfect finishing touch to your game day look.
As far as shoes, white cowboy boots were all the rage last season, and I predict that this year will be no different — save for the addition of bows tied to the side of your boots. Orange and purple sneakers continue to climb in popularity and provide comfort for a long day. If you are planning to sit in the student section or on the Hill, keep in mind that you will be standing for the majority of the game, so make sure your shoes are comfy!
No matter how you’re styled for a day in Death Valley, make sure to wear sunscreen because there is nowhere to hide from the sun in the stadium.
It’s also important to keep themed games in mind — for example, you will want to wear pink to the Breast Cancer Awareness game on Oct. 19, and the Military Appreciation game on Nov. 23 will be a “purple out.”
Great places to shop for game day gear are True Orange Boutique, The Fizz Boutique and Tigertown Graphics. Online you can find great game day options on Amazon, Howdy Honey, PrettyLittleThing and Altar’d State.
