Clemson volleyball traveled to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to compete in the Western Michigan tournament last weekend, where they finished 2-1 to start their season.
The Tigers began the tournament competing against Loyola Chicago on Friday, where they swept the Wolves in three sets. Senior Aźyah Dailey led the way with a hitting percentage of .563, and freshman Neea-Maria Joki started her collegiate career with 11 kills on the day. Clemson had nine aces in the match and 14 blocks to start its season with a dominant win.
Day two handed the Tigers their first loss of the season against Loyola Marymount. Dailey and Joki led the team with seven kills each on 20 and 32 attempts, respectively. This gave the two hitters a hitting percentage of .050 and .031. Sophomore Kate Hansen had the highest hitting percentage of .308, but with many Tigers struggling to hit consistently, they fell short, losing the match 3-1.
Clemson ended the tournament by facing off against Western Michigan and closed out the weekend, winning 3-1 on Sunday. The Tigers lost set one 25-27 but came back in the last three to take the win over the Broncos and break their 19-match home winning streak. Dailey led Clemson with 19 kills, and junior Mia McGrath put up 14 kills to help the Tigers end the weekend victorious.
Clemson volleyball will travel to Statesboro, Georgia, to compete in the GATA Challenge beginning on Sept. 6, where they will face Maryland Eastern Shore and Georgia Southern.
The Tigers will play their first game in the new Jervey Gym on Sept. 19 against Kennesaw State at 7 p.m.
