The Clemson Tigers took down the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a dominating fashion, winning 66-20. The offense not only found their footing but completely overpowered the Mountaineers’ defense, finishing with 712 total yards.
While almost everybody on the field was executing their role with intention, the receiving room stood out in a way that Clemson fans have not seen in years.
Clemson’s receiving and tight end room racked up a total of 460 receiving yards, led by freshman Bryant Wesco Jr. with 130 receiving yards. Wesco Jr. established himself tonight as the primary deep threat for Klubnick following his 76-yard trip to the endzone less than two minutes after kickoff. His ability to utilize his speed and route running to create separation allows him to be a primary target.
After the game, Wesco Jr. voiced how surreal of an experience he had playing in front of a passionate home crowd.
“I never in my life would have dreamed I would be here right now,” Wesco Jr. said. With his early highlight reel catches, Death Valley had quite the welcoming moment for the freshman.
Head coach Dabo Swinney also recognized the success the receiving corps had Saturday night, especially his rising stars. He expressed his excitement to see them develop in their future years at Clemson.
Wesco Jr. and “TJ are special dudes, and they are not guys that are here for just a semester. They get to grow in our program,” Swinney said following the win.
Tight end Jake Briningstool hauled in seven receptions for 100 yards, along with a pair of touchdowns on the night. The senior didn’t serve much as a deep threat but rather a reliable target for Klubnik.
Clemson’s offense was firing on all cylinders from the first drive of the game, leaving Appalachian State with no answers to stop the Tigers. The Tigers now head into their first bye week of the season prior to seeking revenge on rival North Carolina State on Sept. 21.
