The No. 5 Clemson men’s soccer team bounced back from their first loss of the season with a dominant 6-0 victory over the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (0-3-2) on Tuesday night at Historic Riggs Field.
In his first start of the season, junior forward James Kelly kicked off the scoring for the Tigers (2-1-1), sending a shot into the top right of the net off a touch from Jackson Wrobel just two minutes into the game. From that point on, Clemson never looked back.
The Tigers spread the workload evenly, with all six goals coming from six different players, five of whom scored their first goals of the season. The variety of scorers, paired with a total of 24 players earning playing time, drew praise from head coach Mike Noonan.
There’s good depth of the team, which creates good competition and training,” he said. “Players who got an opportunity tonight took their opportunity, and they’re making my job a little more difficult when it comes to selection.”
In addition to their command on offense, the Tigers did much of the same on defense. The Greyhounds were held to just one shot, which came 26 seconds into the game. Noonan said the loss against Stanford last Friday led to some adjustments on both sides of the ball going into Tuesday’s game.
“We addressed some things from the Stanford game, and the job is to get better with every game, and I thought the guys took a step tonight.”
The Tigers will next travel north to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where they are set to take on the Boston College Eagles this Friday at 7 p.m. in their second ACC matchup of the season.
