Clemson volleyball finished 1-1 in the GATA Challenge in Statesboro, Georgia, this past weekend.
On Friday, the Tigers defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-1. Clemson again brought the service pressure with nine aces in the match, three belonging to freshman Neea-Maria Joki. Junior Mia McGrath led the team in kills and finished with 15 kills and a 0.480 hitting percentage.
Her kills were followed by sophomore Kennedy Wagner, who put up 14 and a hitting percentage of 0.345. The Tigers won the first set 25-16 but fell short in the second, 25-21. Clemson came back to win the next two to end the match, winning 25-15 and 25-20.
Clemson faced off against Georgia Southern on Saturday, losing 3-1. Senior Aźyah Dailey had 18 kills on 42 attempts, and Joki had 15 kills on 42 attempts. The Tigers still put up seven aces in the match, but with 14 serving errors, the Tigers fell short in four sets.
The Eagles took the first two sets 25-21 and 26-24. The Tigers came back in the third to win 25-23, but Georgia Southern ended the fourth set 28-26 to end the day.
Clemson will next travel to Boone, North Carolina, on Thursday to compete in the Black and Gold Invitational, where they will compete against Appalachian State, Wofford and Winthrop.
The Tigers will be back in Jervey Gym on Thursday, Sept. 19, to face off against Kennesaw State in their home opener.
