The No. 25 Clemson women’s soccer team tied the Charlotte 49ers in a battle that ended with both teams scoreless on Sunday night.
This matchup marks the Tigers’ second tie in as many games, following their 1-1 draw against their in-state rivals, the South Carolina Gamecocks. Clemson looked for a better outcome against the 49ers, a team they have not gone toe-to-toe with since 2014.
Throughout the contest, the Tigers seemed to have the edge offensively, totaling 11 shot opportunities, seven corner kicks and four shots on goal, compared to the 49ers’ two shot opportunities, two corner kicks and one sole shot on goal. However, the 49ers’ goalie was all over the net, allowing none of Clemson’s opportunities.
Though these teams had not faced off in 10 years, tensions were high on both sides of the ball, with both squads wanting to bring home a crucial win. In the 73rd minute, Charlotte defender/midfielder Grace Keighley picked up a yellow card and, only four minutes later, received a red card, both for unsportsmanlike conduct. This stamped the defensive frustration for the 49ers as they racked up 15 total fouls to the Tigers’ six.
With the bulk of its season ahead, the Tigers head back home to Historic Riggs Field to open up conference play against the No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies.
