Just two weeks in, the 2024 season has already seen many upsets and shifts in rankings throughout the realm of college football, particularly within the ACC.
In the preseason, Florida State held the top spot in most predictions, including the ACC’s official power rankings. After missing the playoffs following a 13-0 season, the Seminoles have now lost their last three games dating back to last year’s Orange Bowl. They now find themselves at the bottom of conference standings after back-to-back losses to underdogs.
However, Mike Norvell’s hasn’t been the only squad struggling to find momentum. Several of the best projected ACC teams have been upset in the opening games.
Clemson and NC State, both expected to finish at the top of conference rankings, were dominated by SEC opponents, with Clemson falling to Georgia by 31 points and NC State suffering a 41-point loss to Tennessee.
Virginia Tech and SMU also entered the year hoping to shake up the conference and contend for a championship. However, both fell as heavy favorites, with Virginia Tech’s loss to Vanderbilt and SMU’s defeat at the hands of BYU.
While the ACC’s typical top contenders have struggled, teams further down the projections have also had unlikely starts to their seasons, but in a more positive direction.
Boston College, California, Syracuse and Virginia all remain undefeated despite being projected to finish outside of the top 10, with each team winning at least one game they entered projected to lose. Georgia Tech sits at 2-1 after opening their season with a victory over the Seminoles in the Dublin game.
With early upsets and unexpected performers headlining the ACC, it’s clear that this year’s race for the conference title is as unpredictable as ever.
