Greenville’s Fluor Field flourished this past Saturday as it played host to the 25th annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, put on by the Asociación Hispano-Americana de Mujeres. The event showcased the many cultures within the Hispanic community.
Tables representing a variety of Hispanic countries lined the stadium walls, decorated with items such as food, clothing, photos and art. In addition to their table, the people representing their cultures dressed up in traditional clothing from their countries.
A fun and family-friendly touch was added to the day with an opportunity for kids to receive a passport upon entry that they could get stamped at each country’s table. After giving visitors a brief overview, representatives of each culture would stamp the passports, allowing kids to learn about the Hispanic community through an interactive activity.
The festival began with an introduction explaining the history of Hispanic Heritage Month. After the introduction, representatives wearing traditional clothing and carrying national flags introduced the different countries. The countries represented were Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Honduras, Venezuela, the United States and the Dominican Republic.
Festival attendees could also attend live music and dance shows spotlighting each nation throughout the festival. There were also multiple food vendors selling tamales, empanadas, Brazilian pizza, tacos, elote, horchata, coffees, cakes and churros. This festival was not only an opportunity to present Hispanic culture but also a great way for individuals to share what’s important about their culture with the community.
