The then-No. 5 Clemson Tigers faced off against the Holy Cross Crusaders, tying the match 2-2 for their second draw of the year on Monday evening.
The Tigers (3-1-2, 1-0-1 ACC) led the match 2-1 in the 53rd minute after a lackluster offensive performance in the first half. However, a red card on Clemson’s Galen Flynn for denying a scoring opportunity left the Tigers with only 10 players for the final 21 minutes of the match.
In this time, the Crusaders were able to score a game-tying free kick with one minute left.
The contest wasn’t a usual-looking performance for Clemson United, as it took the team longer to get up to pace offensively while also letting up the game’s first goal. The initial goal from the Crusaders came off a dropped ball by junior goalkeeper Joseph Andema in the box that allowed Holy Cross forward Evan Jones to score off the rebound.
Clemson United kept striving for improvement offensively in the first half and seemed to pick up momentum in the latter half, with two headers within five minutes.
The first came in the 51st minute of the contest, as defender Arthur Duquenne sent a crosser to Tyler Trimnal for a hard header that hit straight into the back net. The next came in just the 53rd minute; senior midfielder Joran Gerbet’s precise corner kick assist to the center of the box gave James Kelly a perfect header into the back right side of the net.
Clemson United next takes on conference rival Wake Forest at Historic Riggs Field on Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m., where the Tigers will look to bounce back and regain their form.
