Clemson has generated professional athletes across many sports throughout the years. With so many athletes from Clemson becoming professionals, the Tigers have generated an impressive pipeline from Clemson to the NWSL. Here is an update on some of the former Tigers in the NWSL.
The Washington Spirit selected former Clemson midfielder Hal Hershfelt as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NWSL draft. In her rookie season, Hershfelt quickly established herself with 28 tackles and two goals in 20 games. Hershfelt was also an alternate for the 2024 Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. women’s soccer team.
Another rookie on the Spirit from Clemson is forward Makenna Morris. Morris has played six games in the 2024 season, scored one goal and assisted another. Morris was selected No. 13 in the 2024 NWSL draft, pairing her with Hershfelt.
Current Chicago Red Stars defender Sam Staab has also represented the Tigers well in her career in the NWSL. Staab, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 draft, has impressed in the 2024 season with 10 tackles, two assists and one goal for the Red Stars.
