The No. 4 Clemson men’s soccer team (4-1-2, 2-1-0 ACC) earned a 1-0 victory against Wake Forest (2-3-3, 0-1-1 ACC) on Friday night, securing it’s second straight win in conference play.
Defense was stout on both sides, and a scoreless first half made it seem that a single goal might be all it would take to win the match. A Wake Forest penalty in the 53rd minute gave Clemson all the opportunity it needed.
Remi Okunlola sprinted into the box looking to create a scoring chance when he was fouled, subsequently giving the Tigers their first penalty kick of the season and a chance to take the lead
Senior midfielder Joran Gerbet sent the penalty kick into the bottom left of the net, a go-ahead goal that ultimately decided the match. The goal was Gerbet’s second of the season.
Wake Forest attempted to draw even before the end of the game, sending seven shots following the penalty kick. The Clemson defense held strong, shutting out the Demon Deacons to secure the victory.
In the win, Clemson outshot Wake Forest 19-13, including seven on goal compared to Wake Forest’s five. The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Tigers, and the third for goalkeeper Joseph Andema.
Clemson United returns to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they face off against Liberty at Historic Riggs Field.
