Clemson women’s soccer dropped to the Pittsburgh Panthers on Thursday, ending with a 4-1 loss. This game marked the Tigers’ (4-5-2, 0-4-0 ACC) fourth consecutive loss, all of which have been conference matchups.
The lone scorer for the Tigers, sophomore midfielder Christian Brathwaite, picked up her third goal of the season.
The Panthers (8-3-2, 2-2-1 ACC) came out strong and took an early lead, scoring in the ninth minute of the match. Keera Melenhorst scored off an attempted clearance by Clemson defender Layne St. George, and less than 10 minutes later, Pitt struck again.
Clemson goalkeeper Nona Reason recorded four saves off the Panthers’ six shots on goal in the first half, holding the score to 2-0.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were scoreless until Pitt’s Samiah Phiri, off a pass from Melenhorst, dodged the Tigers’ defense and made the score 3-0 in the 61st minute.
Clemson was able to get more shots as the second half progressed but still struggled to get the ball into the back of the net. The Tigers finally found their way through the Panthers’ defense in the 82nd minute when sophomore Jenna Tobia fed Brathwaite the ball for a Clemson goal that terminated Pitt’s chances of a shutout.
Just over a minute later, Pitt answered, sealing the deal with Sarah Schupansky’s shot to the top left corner of the net off an assist from Rylee Keeley.
The Tigers maintained possession for 44% of the game but struggled to break down Pitt’s defense, only recording one shot on target, compared to the Panthers’ 10 shots. Clemson’s Reason, a North Carolina transfer, prevented six potential goals by the Panthers.
The Tigers have another chance to get in the ACC win column this Sunday at 1 p.m. as they face off against the Boston College Eagles at Historic Riggs Field for Senior Day. Clemson will be honoring seniors Ella Hauser, Sydney Minarik, Ally Lynch, Renee Lyles, Mackenzie Duff and Layne St. George at Sunday’s game.
