The Savannah Bananas have taken the world of baseball by storm over the last few years, and next year, they will also be taking over Memorial Stadium on April 26.
The Bananas announced their 2025 schedule Thursday evening, part of which included games at multiple major league ballparks and NFL stadiums. The game at Memorial Stadium will mark the first-ever “Banana Ball” game in a football stadium.
Banana Ball, as the team has dubbed it, is a spin on the traditional game of baseball, intended to make the sport more fun and engaging for fans in attendance, and some of the game’s unique rules even incorporate fans as a part of the game.
The most notorious rule is that if a fan catches a foul ball, the batter is out. Other rules include a two-hour time limit and no bunting, encouraging teams to speed up an otherwise lengthy game while packing those two hours with plenty of action.
The Savannah Bananas began in 2015 as an ordinary baseball team in the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer league. Now owners Jesse and Emily Cole started the team to fill the void left by Savannah’s previous team, the Sand Gnats.
The team’s journey to stardom was not easy, though, and the future looked bleak before the first game had even been played. By January 2016, the Coles were forced to sell their home to fund the team because they had sold so few tickets.
However, a team naming contest just a month later quickly changed the team’s course.
On Feb. 25, 2016, the Savannah Bananas were introduced as the newest team of the CPL, but residents of Savannah were skeptical of the name and said that the team would never sell tickets. Nevertheless, the stadium sold out on opening night, and the rest is history.
Banana Ball was first tested in play in 2018 at Lander University and officially played for the first time in June 2020. At the time, the team remained in the CPL until the conclusion of the 2022 season, earning three championships during their time in the league.
From 2022 onwards, it has been all about Banana Ball for the Bananas. Since then, the team has filled stadiums across the country, including several major league ballparks, and won three Petitt Cup championships.
The Bananas will look to continue captivating packed crowds when take over a new kind of field when they play their first game inside a football stadium at Memorial Stadium on April 26, 2025.
