Pilates Social Clemson is making waves downtown by introducing reformer Pilates to the community. With a diverse range of classes tailored for all skill levels, the studio offers an accessible and transformative workout that promotes physical and mental well-being.
Conveniently located within walking distance of the University and several student housing complexes, it has quickly become a go-to destination for students and locals seeking an effective low-impact exercise option.
Reformer Pilates is known for targeting and strengthening core muscles while improving flexibility, posture and overall fitness. It involves a reformer machine, which uses springs and pulleys to create resistance for a series of controlled movements.
Unlike traditional Pilates, which you usually do on a mat, reformer Pilates adds extra support and resistance. This makes it an excellent workout for everyone, regardless of their fitness level.
The inspiration behind Pilates Social Clemson comes from its founder, Paige Comerford, who developed a deep affection for Clemson as an undergraduate student. After being diagnosed with a rare neurological condition during her sophomore year, Comerford turned to reformer Pilates upon the recommendation of her doctors in New York. “The low-impact but high-intensity workouts helped me improve my health,” she said.
However, upon returning to Clemson, she discovered a lack of reformer studios available to continue her practice. Driven by her love for the community and a desire to share the benefits of Pilates, Comerford opened the first and only reformer Pilates studio in the area during her gap year before medical school.
Comerford’s vision extends far beyond fitness; it also includes a commitment to philanthropy. “I believe in a greater purpose here on Earth,” she explained. “A portion of all our proceeds goes to charity in support of health, wellness and medical research.” This dedication is significant to Comerford, as it honors her childhood friend, Mya Lin Terry, who lost her battle with cancer when they were both in fifth grade.
The butterfly featured in Pilates Social’s logo is a tribute to Mya, encapsulating Comerford and her studio’s mission: “Look good. Feel good. Do good. Through a connection of mind, body, and soul, we are whole.”
Pilates Social has already made significant charitable contributions, including a $1,000 donation to the Mya Lin Terry Foundation to support children battling cancer. Comerford has also been actively involved in volunteering at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Greenville for years. When Clemson Miracle approached her to collaborate on a project to expand the playroom on the oncology/hematology floor, it moved her deeply.
“I personally know how important the expansion of that playroom is for the children and cannot wait to help make it happen!” she said excitedly. To support this initiative, Pilates Social and Clemson Miracle will host a Mats for Miracles event on Nov. 5, with 100% of ticket proceeds directed toward this vital project.
In addition to these efforts, Pilates Social’s charitable arm, “PS Cares,” is currently running a “Thanks-GIVEAWAY” in partnership with MD Aesthetics to raise food for the Clemson Paw Pantry, a food pantry on campus for students in need.
Throughout October, the studio has been focused on spreading awareness about breast cancer, a cause that has affected Comerford’s family and friends personally. The pink t-shirts they are giving away, along with ribbons available at the front desk, have sparked essential conversations about the importance of mammograms.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“I feel blessed every day!” Comerford exclaimed, highlighting the strong sense of community that defines Clemson. She hopes that each client and employee feels connected and supported, stating, “We are all better when we work together.”
This sense of belonging is a cornerstone of Pilates Social’s approach, as they strive to foster a welcoming environment for all.
As the only reformer Pilates studio in Clemson, all classes at Pilates Social are unique to the area. This distinction, coupled with a commitment to community building, allows participants to explore their fitness goals at their own pace. Reformer Pilates not only strengthens the core but also enhances balance and coordination, making it a comprehensive workout that is suitable for everyone, from beginners to seasoned professionals.
Like any new business, Pilates Social has faced its challenges, particularly in staffing. Comerford encountered difficulty finding certified reformer instructors in the area. After struggling to fill positions, she took the initiative and brought a certification program directly to the studio. “Creating opportunities in our community for local residents and students and helping our employees earn competitive wages has been tremendously rewarding,” Comerford noted.
Whether you’re trying Pilates for the first time or are an experienced practitioner, Pilates Social Clemson offers a welcoming environment to embark on or continue your fitness journey. With its convenient location, diverse class offerings and a strong community-centric mission, the studio is dedicated to making a positive impact in Clemson and beyond.
