Students have crowded the lawn near Cope Hall every Monday since the beginning of the semester to participate in Cope Movie Mondays, a fun new tradition.
A group of students organizes the events: Ben Smith, a freshman mechanical engineering major, Paul Cobin, a freshman pre-business major, Sam Udouj, a freshman majoring in packaging science, Tyler Nelson, a freshman in the architecture program, Charlie Marchbanks, a freshman engineering major and Samuel Norman, a senior business major.
“We were just having lunch and had the idea,” Norman said. “We wanted to do something to bring the community together — something other than a party,” Udouj added. “Then we realized that Connor had a speaker and I had a projector, and it all came together.”
The first screening was on September 2, when the group set up a projector and speakers to show “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.” That day, an Instagram page appeared with a Google Form for students to suggest future movies.
The Instagram page then posted a poll the following Sunday with four options: “Surfs Up,” “The Notebook,” “Cars” and “Baby Driver.” “Surfs Up” ultimately won out and was shown next. The event’s crowd decreased slightly in subsequent weeks, but not enough to discourage the students. Given the relatively large crowd they have continued to draw, the group plans to continue the event every Monday night at 8:30.
Information about each screening is posted on the event’s Instagram page, @copemoviemondays.
