Clemson women’s soccer dropped to the Virginia Cavaliers in its final road match on Friday night by a score of 0-1. The only goal scored came late in the second half, with both offenses struggling to cut through the opposing back line in a defensive stalwart.
The Cavaliers (11-5-0, 4-5-0 ACC) outshot the Tigers (6-8-2, 2-7 ACC) five to four in the first half, but Clemson goalkeeper Addy Holgorsen managed to keep the score at zero with the help of the defense. With one goal allowed, Holgorsen’s season total went up to 16.
Although they struggled against the Cavaliers’ defense at first, the Tigers were given an opportunity with a corner kick towards the end of the opening period. They did not find the back of the net and had three more corner kicks in the second half which did not result in any points.
After coming out of the locker room to open the second half, the team continued to push through with its strong defense. However, Virginia middle Lia Godfrey broke through with the only goal of the game in the 85th minute.
The Tigers will be back in Historic Riggs Field on Thursday to take on Louisville at 7 p.m. for a Halloween conference game to end the regular season. With its record, Clemson is looking for a win against the Cardinals to improve their chances of qualifying for the ACC Tournament.
