Silver Wings is a community service and professional development club at Clemson dedicated to fostering leadership and community service skills within students and creating personal, professional and civic growth.
Open to both cadets and civilians, Silver Wings’ Region III John W. Raymond Chapter encourages students to engage with their community and develop as active leaders.
Service is the foundation of Silver Wings, a legacy dating back to its predecessor club, Angel Flight, which was established in the 1950s. Silver Wings was originally a support organization founded by female Air Force ROTC detachments. Now inclusive and co-ed, Silver Wings maintains a dedication to service and regularly participates in community-based projects.
Recently, members assisted Clemson Downs in restoring a resident garden impacted by Hurricane Helene. The chapter has also participated in other projects, such as writing letters for the Letters Against Isolation project, participating in Walk for Water to provide clean water for families in need, and fundraising for the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports veterans and first responders.
Silver Wings places a strong emphasis on professional development and leadership, with members participating in regional and national conclaves alongside the Arnold Air Society. At these events, members gain access to workshops, networking opportunities, and insights from leaders in the field.
“We have unique opportunities to hear from generals, astronauts, and industry professionals,” said Clemson chapter president Amelia Fischer, underscoring the networking value of these events. Members have the chance to develop valuable skills, such as effective communication and event planning, through workshops and seminars.
This focus on professional and leadership growth has inspired members to pursue careers in related fields, with some, including the chapter president, exploring opportunities with the Air Force Civilian Service.
“Leadership is all about taking care of your people,” Fischer said. “If the team is supported, then the mission will be accomplished. My time in Silver Wings has also opened my eyes to the civilian opportunities in the Department of Defense. The Air Force Civilian Service is an option I’m considering after graduation.”
Civic awareness is also essential to Silver Wings’ mission. Locally, the chapter engages in projects that assess and respond to community needs. The chapter is currently preparing to rebuild a food and hygiene library they originally constructed for New Hope Baptist Church.
“You get out what you put into this organization. Putting time and effort into our community is never time wasted. My advice to member candidates is to enjoy the process and work hard so the results will exceed expectations,” Fischer said, highlighting the rewarding nature of contributing to impactful work.
With future projects lined up, Silver Wings is committed to its mission of service and leadership. For those who wish to join, the organization offers candidacy seasons each semester, providing a welcoming entry point to students seeking to develop leadership and service skills.
The Clemson chapter of Silver Wings demonstrates the importance of community service, professional development and civic awareness. Through their work, members are not only contributing to Clemson and the surrounding community but are also gaining experience that will shape their future careers and roles as leaders.
