Clemson football and head coach Dabo Swinney have made another move through the transfer portal on Thursday afternoon, this time adding to the defensive roster.
From Carmel, Indiana, defensive end Will Heldt has made the decision to leave Purdue and head out east to join the Clemson Tigers. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound sophomore made public his transfer from his home state school to Clemson on Thursday, and the first confirmed report was from Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Having also received offers from two big-name schools, Texas A&M and LSU, Heldt becomes the first defensive player in Clemson’s history to be picked up through the portal.
In the 2024 season, Heldt finished with 56 tackles, five sacks and 26 pressures for the Boilermakers.
ESPN marked Heldt as a top edge rusher with two years of eligibility left.
Clemson has lost two wide receivers to the portal thus far, in Noble Johnson and Troy Stellato. Johnson has already announced his commitment to Arizona State University, heading out west to the Big 12 on Dec. 15. Stellato announced his intention to enter the portal on Dec. 3 but has yet to make a decision on where he will play out his final two years of eligibility.
On the defensive side, the team lost Sherrod Covil Jr., who transferred to Virginia Tech on Wednesday night.
More moves, both in and out of Clemson, are sure to come as the team leaves the 2024-2025 season behind. Coaches, players and fans alike are already gearing up for the 2025 fall football season, hoping to build a roster of elite athletes that will drive their team to success.
