The 43rd annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will take place this Saturday through next Wednesday.
“This event aims to offer our community a range of opportunities to learn, serve, and engage with activities that highlight the significance of Dr. King’s teachings on human rights, social justice, and moral courage,” André Moxie, the vice president of Clemson Undergraduate Student Government, told The Tiger via email.
Saturday, Jan. 18, will hold the 2025 MLK Civil Rights Day Trip to Charleston, South Carolina. The one-day trip consists of a visit to the International African American Museum, as well as a group dinner before returning to Clemson’s campus.
Those interested in participating can apply on a “first-come, first-served basis” and submit a $20 payment, according to Clemson University’s website.
Monday, Jan. 20, is scheduled as an MLK Day of Service “to celebrate MLK’s legacy and support his belief in the creation of a beloved community,” according to the website. Volunteers will serve with six various community partners in the towns of Clemson, Pendleton, Anderson and Central.
Both breakfast and transportation to and from the service centers will be provided for volunteers.
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, a Commemorative Keynote Program is planned at the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts with speaker PJ Morton.
Morton is a singer, songwriter, producer, five-time Grammy Award winner, 20-time Grammy Award nominee and is based in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has sold out “countless shows at historic venues like the Apollo Theater, Kennedy Center and others around the world,” according to Clemson’s website.
Seating is first come, first served, but the event is completely open to the public. The “MLK Excellence in Service Awards” will also be handed out during the night.
Finally, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m., a Table for Eight: Interfaith Community Dinner will take place at the Barnes Center to “celebrate the interfaith and coalition-building legacy” of King.
