Christopher Mathis McConnell, a 35-year-old man, was imprisoned on Wednesday on a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge in the Oconee County Detention Center.
McConnell is from Westminster, South Carolina, and was arrested after an investigation revealed evidence of McConnell committing sexual battery against a teenage student.
According to the arrest warrant procured against McConnell, McConnell used “aggravated force” to perform sexual battery against the victim.
The investigation began on Jan. 8 after a school resource officer assigned to a school in the school district of Oconee County met with the teenage victim and school employees, according to a news release from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
“During the initial stages of the investigation, the victim told the SRO of a sexual assault involving McConnell that occurred on October 2nd of last year when the victim was still a minor,” the news release states.
The Department of Social Services was then contacted, and the investigation was transferred to a violent crimes investigator in the Criminal Investigations Bureau.
The OCSO does not plan on releasing any information to the public that might identify the victim because of the “nature of the crime” and to protect the “integrity of the investigation, and that of the teenager who is the victim of a sex crime,” according to the news release.
McConnell’s bail bond request was denied, and he is currently awaiting a hearing.
The OCSO will continue this investigation.
