A previous version of this article stated that the individual was riding a moped. The individual was driving an electric-powered bike, according to CUPD’s Instagram. The Tiger regrets this error and has since corrected it.
An individual riding a electric-powered bike was hit by a vehicle at approximately 10:45 a.m. today at the intersection of Old Greenville Highway and Sherman Street.
As emergency medical service ambulances, city of Clemson Police Department and Clemson University Police Department officers responded to the scene, numerous bystanders surrounded the accident.
Two witnesses who were walking on the sidewalk next to Bowman Field when the accident occurred told The Tiger that the driver of the vehicle was making a left-hand turn. They were unsure whether the traffic light was a green arrow when the accident occurred.
The witnesses noted that the individual driving the bike hit the vehicle driver’s windshield, which they believe was the reason for a loud “smack.” They also said that the vehicle driver was “freaking out” and “screaming” after the collision.
“It’s very possible (the driver) just didn’t see anyone crossing,” a witness told The Tiger.
The bike driver was then strapped to a gurney and transferred into an ambulance. While emergency medical technicians were tending to the bike driver, officers on the scene asked bystanders to continue moving along.
This is a developing story. The Tiger will update this article with additional information as it becomes available.
