Freshman Del Jones had his eyes set on the rim, as Clemson (21-5, 13-2 ACC) ran away from Florida State (15-10, 6-8 ACC) 72-46 in Tallahassee, Florida.
Just eight minutes into the game, Jones received the ball in the corner. Muscling by a bigger defender, Jones found himself in the middle of the lane and finished a floater through a hard foul in the night’s highlight. The shot put Clemson up by double digits, and Florida State would never get within that mark as the Tigers continued to pull away for a 26-point victory.
Clemson got out to an early lead, with its starter’s fast play controlling the game’s tempo. Florida State tried to keep the Tigers’ lead within reach with a 3-pointer from Jamir Watkins.
Following that shot, the Tigers went on a 13-2 run, including a series of highlights from Jones, in which Florida State didn’t score a single basket until 10 minutes left in the first half — a four-minute drought.
Clemson fans have been used to a Hunter filling up the box score, and although that was the same, it came from the player wearing No. 2 — not No. 1. Dillon Hunter, Chase Hunter’s brother, led the team in scoring with 17 points to go along with four assists, taking advantage of his chance in the starting lineup.
Dillon Hunter showed off with a 7-for-11 performance from the field and 3-for-6 from three, which included a transition three off an Ian Schieffelin steal late in the first half.
Clemson kept the success rolling through the second half, with many players making an impression on the game. By the time the final buzzer sounded, nine Tigers tallied points to their name.
Although the Seminoles’ plan to stop Chase Hunter worked, their effort against the rest of the Clemson offense fell short, as the group effort for the Tigers led to a 72-point offensive performance.
The Tigers will enjoy a bit of a break before they travel to take on SMU on Saturday, Feb. 22, to take on the Mustangs.
