A man was arrested by the Gainesville Police Department on Feb. 13 on murder charges after killing a pedestrian in a hit-and-run in southern Oconee County.
William Barney Drummond, a 43-year-old of Westminster, South Carolina, was driving south on U.S. Highway 11 near Spearman Road on Feb. 10 when he struck Devon James Turner, a 34-year-old pedestrian, according to a press release.
During the time between the incident and Drummond’s arrest, Drummond altered his appearance, according to investigators. The Gainesville Police Department also found that he was in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest.
The E-911 communications center was alerted at approximately 3:55 p.m. of the incident on Feb 10, the day that it occurred.
While the incident occurred in southern Oconee County, Drummond’s arrest took place in Gainesville, Georgia. Drummond was taken into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Drummonds was transferred to the Hall County Jail in Gainesville, Georgia, where he was then charged with Turner’s murder.
The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office will continue this investigation and will not release any additional information on the incident at this time.
