Amazon has quickly become one of the best and most prolific distributors of superhero television. They’ve repeatedly proven with hits like “The Boys” and “The Tick” that they know their stuff when it comes to portraying superheroes, especially in a less-than-flattering light. As great as those other shows are, though, their best work has been and continues to be “Invincible.”
The smash-hit animated series debuted its third season on Feb. 6, 2025, dropping the first three episodes simultaneously. New episodes are slated to release every Thursday until early March, and this third season is already shaping up to be just as good, if not better, than what came before.
“Invincible” Season Three has kept everything that made its first two seasons stand out as a major success and elevated them to new heights. The voice cast continues to put in stellar performances. Every time Mark and Debbie Grayson talk, you can feel Steven Yeun and Sandra Oh giving their all to sell the relationship between mother and son.
Fan favorite Omni-Man hasn’t made much of an appearance yet this season, but in his few moments, J.K. Simmons proves why he is so popular with an equally impressive performance. And the incredible work doesn’t stop there.
Season Three adds several new faces to its roster. Xolo Maridueña’s double portrayal of Fightmaster and Dropkick, twins from the future, is entertaining if brief. Simu Liu is great as Multi-Paul, who has been teased to reappear later in the season.
However, the most exciting additions to Invincible’s cast are those yet to appear: Jonathan Banks and Doug Bradley, of “Breaking Bad” and “Hellraiser” fame, respectively. Both are slated to appear later in the season, with the identity of their respective characters being kept well under wraps.
However, fans are confident that Banks will be portraying the antagonist of the season, the sadistic Viltrumite Conquest, with Bradley lending voice to the indestructible superhero Brit. Time will tell if these rumors have any basis to them.
In addition to excellent voice acting, Invincible’s animation is also noteworthy. Some might say the animation quality is subpar, and it’s certainly not super polished. Still, its admittedly lower quality makes the characters look and feel like they were pulled straight from the Image Comic pages where they were first drawn, and the less-real animation adds charm and style to the world.
The most important element that elevates “Invincible” to greatness is its writing. Season Three has pulled no punches in its early episodes. Mark is already struggling with his identity and his life from the start, balancing distancing himself from the GDA, raising his newly superpowered half-brother, Oliver, grappling with the fallout of his father’s actions, and wrestling with the morality of his own and other’s actions. On top of all this, Mark must begin preparing for the arrival of his ultimate enemy, the Viltrumite Empire, who have declared their intentions to conquer Earth.
It remains to be seen how this season, or this show, will end any of these major conflicts. But fans can rest easy knowing that, for now, the team behind this incredible show is continuing to do what they do best.
