While much has been said about Clemson softball’s start to the season, its dramatic victories over Elon and Villanova—4-3 and 1-0, respectively—helped put the team back over .500.
Elon came out swinging in the first game. The Phoenixes grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a home run from Allee Seering. Despite the deficit, the Tigers did not roll over.
In the fourth, Jamison Brockenbrough came up clutch for the Tigers with a two-run single that tied things up. Elon responded with a lead in the fifth, but Clemson had a response of its own in the sixth with Maddie Moore. The senior blasted and hit a two-run double to put the Tigers on top for good.
Macey Cintron pitched seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and racking up 10 strikeouts. The win gave Cintron her third of the season.
Then came the second game against Villanova. The Tigers received a lot of help from Reese Basinger to help the team win in eight innings.
Basinger played eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight. The senior faced multiple jams throughout the game as 10 runners were left on base by the Villanova bats, and each time, she came through unscathed.
Offensively, it was Moore who scored the only run of the game with an RBI walkoff single by Julia Knowler in the bottom of the eighth. She finished the game 2-for-4 and now holds a .395 batting average.
The team will be back in action Saturday afternoon when the Tigers play Marshall at 3 p.m. at McWhorter Stadium.
