Clemson began adding parking sensors to show available spaces in commuter parking lots on March 13 in a collaboration between Clemson University Parking and Transportation Services and eleven-x.
10,000 parking sensors will be installed by the start of the fall 2025 semester, with 3,000 already completed over spring break.
eleven-x is a “smart parking solution” that aims to simplify parking and provide the “best driver experience” by helping drivers find available parking spots more quickly, according to its website. The system works with organizations to reduce parking congestion.
“Finding a parking spot on campus has been really bad, especially this year. I’m hoping the sensors will make it better,” Kaylee Bejarano, a senior psychology major at Clemson, told The Tiger.
The parking sensors will show up on the new Tigers Commute app and show both students and faculty which parking spots are available in different commuter lots. There will also be displays by the lots to show these vacancies.
The Tigers Commute app was initially announced in October 2024. It is a “new unified mobility and commute management platform,” and being able to access “real-time parking” is a feature that is “coming soon,” according to its website.
The app’s overall goal is to “improve [Clemson’s] parking and transportation experience.” By seeing available spots ahead of time, commuting students and faculty can find a parking spot easier.
“These sensors will hopefully make the commuting process easier and more efficient for the entire student body,” Brooke Livingston, a freshman criminal justice major, told The Tiger. “As a first-time commuter in the fall, I’m looking forward to their positive impact during the 2025 semester.”
“This installation is leading the way to improving the parking experience for our staff, students and visitors,” Dan Hofmann, director of the University’s Parking and Transportation Services, told Clemson News.
Tigers Commute can be downloaded on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
