Clemson Undergraduate Student Government senators implemented six temporary rules for the student body president and vice president runoff election that is taking place today.
Allison Jennings, secretary of the CUSG elections board, presented these new regulations to the student senators at a meeting on Monday.
The first new rule Jennings presented holds that a party can only win in a runoff election if they receive a majority of over 50% of the total votes.
The next rule states that the elections board can restrict campaigning days before the runoff election. If a decline in student participation is a concern for either party running in the election, the elections board can provide impartial materials for campaigns.
The third rule designates that during a runoff election, any violation of the designated rules provided to the candidates and top 15 members or a violation of any other regulations in the Election Bylaws may result in a violation report. The respective party’s ticket will be disqualified if the elections board determines that a violation occurred.
Another temporary rule gives the elections board until 11:59 p.m. on the day after the election to review and make decisions about any violation reports that may have been submitted during the runoff election period.
The fifth rule is that if both parties receive a violation, the ticket that received the fewest number of violations will be determined as the winner.
The sixth and final rule states that during the runoff election, violation and disqualification decision meetings will be held by the attorney general, an assistant attorney general and an unbiased member of the Senate Steering Board that the CUSG Senate president will choose. This meeting will occur alongside the elections board.
The candidates running in the runoff election remain Zach Freeman and Maya Khaskhely, and Eli Warnock and Ally Fields.
Results are scheduled to be announced at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 4.
