A student at Tri-County Technical College’s Pendleton campus passed away during class the night of Wednesday, Aug. 27.
48-year-old Elaine Joyce Joseph was enrolled in an evening phlebotomy course, according to officials who spoke with FOX Carolina.
On Wednesday evening, she entered the classroom and was behaving normally until suddenly becoming unresponsive around 6 p.m.
“According to her instructor, Elaine appeared well upon arrival and was participating normally when she suddenly became unresponsive,” as reported by WSPA 7 News from a statement released on the evening of Aug. 27.
The instructor and students immediately began resuscitation efforts, conducting CPR until first responders arrived. Despite the first responders’ efforts, Joseph was announced dead at the scene.
TCTC released a statement following the event:
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Elaine’s family, friends and classmates. This is a profound loss for our College community, and we are committed to supporting those affected during this difficult time. Counseling and support services will be available for students, faculty, and staff,” Karen Potter, a spokesperson for TCTC, told FOX Carolina.
Joseph’s death is currently under investigation by the Anderson County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. No foul play is suspected at this time.
