Clemson United dominated No. 10 Duke with a score of 3-0 in front of an electric home crowd on Friday night.
After suffering their first ACC defeat last week to NC State, the Tigers bounced back convincingly with three second-half goals to send them from fourth to second in the ACC standings.
The first half was tense and emotions ran high, but it wasn’t until the 54th minute that Kwaku Agyabeng netted the opener, marking his first career goal. Senior Nathan Richmond registered the assist after a messy exchange in the box.
The momentum began rolling for Clemson. Just a few minutes later, the team capitalized on a corner with a tricky routine that eventually fell to Misei Yoshizawa, who struck the ball past the keeper.
Within four minutes, Yoshizawa found the back of the net again, securing his brace. Duke goalkeeper Eryk Dymora found himself far outside the area to prevent Richmond from chasing down a loose ball. Yoshizawa pounced on a poor pass and was able to find the empty net from roughly 30 yards out.
Clemson sits two points off the ACC leader, Stanford. With two games remaining in the conference schedule, the Tigers are still in contention to become league leaders and secure a bye in the ACC tournament — a goal that head coach Mike Noonan acknowledges.
Clemson United returns to Historic Riggs Field on Tuesday, Oct. 21, taking on the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 6 p.m.
