Before the days of Littlejohn Coliseum, Clemson basketball played its home games at Fike Field House. Hosting its first Clemson basketball game in 1930, Fike Field House was a lowly lit arena that was home to exciting history. Although Littlejohn is now home to Clemson basketball, Fike Field House’s final game hosted Georgia Tech, Clemson men’s basketball’s opponent on Wednesday.
In that final game in Fike Field House on Feb. 28, 1968, Clemson lost to Georgia Tech 80-51 to wrap up the arena’s last game.
As the old adage goes, when one door closes, another one opens up. That new door opened up to Littlejohn Coliseum on Nov. 30, 1968. Ironically, Georgia Tech was Clemson’s first opponent at the arena. The result stayed the same for the Tigers though, as Georgia Tech won 76-72.
In 39 seasons of play at Fike Field House, Clemson won 200 games. Now, the Tigers look to continue to win at Littlejohn, where they host Georgia Tech on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m.
The matchup will occur nearly 54 years to the day since the Tigers played their last game at Fike Field House against Georgia Tech.
The last time these two teams faced off this season, Georgia Tech defeated Clemson 69-64. Clemson currently sits at (14-15) and the Yellow Jackets hold an (11-18) record.
A win over Georgia Tech could be instrumental in Clemson’s momentum heading into the ACC tournament, which will begin on March 8.
With a new legacy built at Littlejohn, it is well within the reach of Clemson to beat Georgia Tech, reach the .500 mark and avenge the loss from 54 years ago.
