Clemson’s offense has seemingly improved in every category this year compared to where it was a season ago, and first-year offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter has played a crucial role in that success.
Following the Tigers’ 31-3 victory over Boston College in Week 6, Streeter had high remarks for his offense.
Streeter praised quarterback DJ Uiagalelei for how he “continues to overcome some of the adversity in games and continue to be a great leader for (Clemson’s) offense.”
“There’s a ton of confidence with DJ and with me calling plays,” Streeter said. “I have confidence in him going out there and making the right decisions.”
Uiagalelei and the quarterback room is not the only position Streeter has had praise for this season.
When speaking to the media on Monday, Streeter noted that the entire offense surrounding Uiagalelei has been integral to Clemson’s success.
“The supporting cast is playing so much better around him, too, so he doesn’t feel like he has to be a superhero,” Streeter said. “He’s just confident because everyone around him is playing well, and he’s so confident in them.”
One of the position groups leading to a confident Uiagalelei is the offensive line.
Considering the Tiger’s offensive line was the subject of much criticism for its lackluster run game last season, all eyes were on the blockers up front to see if their performance would change. Through six games, it has.
When speaking on the group, Streeter noted that the line is “getting better in a lot of areas in the run game” and that he’s “very pleased with the toughness and the grit that those guys up front have.”
Streeter is also aware of the elite talent he has in the tight end room.
When they aren’t run blocking, tight ends Davis Allen and Jake Briningstool have combined for 29 receptions for 331 yards and five touchdowns, giving Streeter two versatile weapons.
“That’s what makes that room so special is that there are guys in that room that can do both,” Streeter said. “Look at Davis Allen – he’s as good of a blocker I’ve seen in my eight years here and a very reliable receiver. Briningstool brings that factor too, as a great receiver and also getting better and better each week.”
Although Streeter holds a generally positive view of his offense, he is aware of the areas of concern. Throughout this season, the Tigers have had success in both first and third down conversions yet struggled with second downs.
“The general rule of thumb is let’s try to get half those yards back, so we get a third and manageable situation,” Streeter said. “That’s something that we’re going to identify and continue to work on.”
Looking forward to the rest of the year, Streeter aims to maintain an unpredictable offense.
“I told the team we have got to be productive in different ways,” Streeter added. “Not just throwing the ball, not just running the ball, not just running with the running backs, but also with our quarterbacks, and I think that makes us harder to defend when you have multiple ways of attacking somebody.”
Clemson will head to Tallahassee, Fla., to face off against the Florida State Seminoles this Saturday, where Streeter and the Tigers’ offense will look to maintain their confidence and improve to 7-0 on the year.
