Clemson guard Alex Hemenway has quietly become one of the best shooters in college basketball.
Playing 14 minutes per game, he is shooting 59.3% from beyond the arc, which ranks second in the country.
That three-point field goal percentage is a direct result from Hemenway’s recent hot streak. In the Tigers’ last four games, he has shot 11-14 from three. On the season, he has shot 16-27.
Overall, Clemson’s team is sixth in the country in three-point field goal percentage at 41%, undoubtedly boosted from Hemenway.
“Some of the teams that don’t know us as well maybe don’t know how good he is in terms of shooting on the move and how quick his release is,” said head coach Brad Brownell of Hemenway after Clemson’s win over Miami (OH).
“He’s a weapon. He’s a guy [that] when he doesn’t play, it’s not good for us.”
After missing two games with the flu early on, the junior sharpshooter is now having his best scoring season, averaging 5.6 points per game. In his freshman and sophomore seasons, he averaged 4.8 and 4.7 points per game, respectively.
The only player that is shooting better from the three-point line is Omari Moore, a guard from San José State. Moore has shot 60% from three this season, making 12 of his 20 attempts.
Hemenway and the Tigers will look to extend their win streak to five when they host Virginia on Jan. 4. Clemson defeated Virginia 67-50 on Dec. 22, but with that game being the most recent for the Tigers, some rust may need to be knocked off.
