On Tuesday, March 7, The Brooks Center was filled with the sounds of Jazz at Lincoln Center presenting “Songs We Love,” providing an affordable opportunity to present jazz programming and rising talent.
“The music in this show is a snapshot of jazz spanning the 1920s through the 1940s, and many of us play this era of jazz when we aren’t touring Songs We Love, but between the nine of us are all sorts of genres ranging from Bebop to Funk, Gospel to Latin, Pop to Experimental,” Haley Freedlund, one of the nine musicians, said, describing the music.
Although many college students are unfamiliar with their style of music, the band claims that “going to a live concert is a great way to familiarize yourself with a genre of music you might not know very intimately! We have a lot of fun, and performing night after night has the band sounding at their best, so we believe we’re offering a great experience that we’d love to share with open ears.”
Not only does Jazz at Lincoln Center play beautiful music, but the band also encourages young artists.
“Sometimes when you’re young and wanting to break into the music scene (or any scene or field of work), there can be this big focus on ‘networking,'” the band said. “One of the best things you can do for yourself and the folks you want to work with and create with is replace the focus on ‘networking’ with ‘community building.’ Nurture friendships and creative partnerships, support the people around you and the artistic ecosystem where it all takes place and you won’t just be rising up yourself, but lifting up those around you.”
