Clemson University has announced that the R.M. Cooper Library, which contains over 1 million print volumes in its six floors of shelves, will be demolished at the end of May.
At the heart of the Clemson campus, Cooper Library is connected to Library Bridge and overlooks the beautiful reflection pond. As prime realty on campus, the land on which Cooper Library stands will soon be cleared for a new construction project.
After finals are over and students move out for the summer, Cooper Library’s massive inventory will be cleared out of the building and construction crews will begin the long process of demolition, according to Clemson officials.
With buildings like the Watt Family Innovation Center and Sirrine Hall standing so close in proximity to the library, the demolition will apparently be a careful and slow-moving process.
Many have asked what will be built in place of Cooper Library, but these questions have yet to be answered by the university. An anonymous source that claims a connection to the university has stated that it will be replaced by a statue of Trevor Lawrence in the style of the Ancient Greeks.
Clemson University now faces the task of renaming Library Bridge, which will no longer connect to a library. Some have suggested that it be renamed to “The Corridor to Nowhere”
Thankfully, Cooper Library is not actually set to be demolished and Library Bridge will keep its name. Happy April Fools’ Day!!
