Recently news broke about the “Back the Blue” event hosted by Tomi Lahren, an infamous conservative commentator, for Clemson University students. This event was put together by Turning Point USA of Clemson University. This is the same organization that released a hateful statement in January 2021 speaking against the implementation of Angela Davis as a keynote speaker for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Nevertheless, Clemson University still had to approve this “Back the Blue” event. Tomi Lahren is not known to shy away from controversy. Some of her detrimental political takes range from denying the existence of institutional racism, condemning Black Lives Matter protesters and comparing them to the Klu Klux Klan, denying climate change, criticizing Colin Kapernick for his choice to kneel during the national anthem and calling for “more Jesus” instead of gun control after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that claimed 17 lives. Despite Lahren using her platform outwardly uninformed and seemingly bigoted, it is concerning to many Clemson students of color that Clemson University would even host an event like this. When speaking with other African American students, we were speechless, but at the same time not surprised that Clemson University could be so insensitive to the feelings of minority students. Tomi Lahren inspires hate and bigotry and that should not be fostered by the University. It is incredibly ironic that Clemson University made a performance of supporting the Black Lives Matter protest led by the Clemson Football team only months ago. Moments like this make me reflect and wonder if Clemson University actually cares about their 8% African American population, but honestly, the fact we only make up 8% of the entire student body should be a red flag in itself. I wonder if Clemson University would have been so “supportive” of the Black Lives Matter campus protest if it wasn’t led by big name football players and turned into a massive positive publicity stunt. Interestingly enough the efforts and protests to save the Clemson Track and Field team led by African American students are ignored to this day. Does the University truly care about black lives or do they just care about the black lives who play ball and bring them millions? I wonder when students of color can truly belong on a campus that cares, as inviting the very people who oppose us to spew bigoted rhetoric is not a good look.
