Clemson was able to blow out SC State for their home opener on Sept. 11, but this week’s game against Georgia Tech may not be as easy. Furthermore, the game this Saturday may be a defining factor in the Clemson season.
“Our next challenge is Georgia Tech, and they are a much improved team,” said head coach Dabo Swinney on Tuesday.
One of those improvements may be on offense. The Yellow Jackets defeated Kennesaw State 45-17, with many of their players setting new personal records.
Georgia Tech quarterback Jordan Yates went 17/23 for 254 yards and four touchdowns last Saturday. Yates’ four touchdown passes set a new school record for most touchdown passes in a debut game.
The Yellow Jacket’s wide receiver Kyric McGowan scored two of the team’s four receiving touchdowns while running back Jordan Mason reeled one in too.
“The back is special. He is a special, special player. He can do it all. He’s going to touch it every which way they can get it to him,” said Swinney.
To top things off, defensive lineman Jordan Domineck returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Like Georgia Tech’s McGowan, Clemson’s freshman running back Will Shipley scored two touchdowns last game. He also had a 30-yard run in the first half.
Another freshman with a strong game is Will Taylor, who had two near-scores. Wide receiver Justyn Ross was able to have an impactful performance as well. Ross scored an 11-yard touchdown and led the Tigers in receiving yards while averaging 17.3 yards per catch.
Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was 14/24 with only 181 yards, exiting the game in the third quarter.
Both teams, all around, seem very aligned, and if Clemson can come out with a win, they may be able to move up from their AP Poll rank of No. 6. Clemson also has a home field advantage, and both teams will be coming off a winner’s high. Georgia Tech is a strong competitor, and it would not be the first time the Jackets have surprised the Tigers with defeat.
The game on Saturday, Sept. 18, against Georgia Tech will be one to watch. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium and can be accessed on several televised networks.
