An 18-year-old woman has been charged with filing a false police report in connection to a reported sexual assault at the Clemson Delta Chi fraternity house, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).
The woman in question, who has been identified as a Clemson student, originally reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted at the Delta Chi fraternity house in Seneca on Jan. 27.
OCSO investigated the allegation. Following the investigation and gathering of evidence, police determined that the relationship between the woman and man at the fraternity house had been consensual.
Police say the woman gave false information to the investigator in the case.
The woman was reached by the Anderson Independent-Mail for comment on Thursday. She insisted that she is not at fault and was sexually assaulted at the fraternity house.
“I’m a victim of sexual assault,” the woman told the Anderson Independent-Mail. “This story is being blown out of proportion, and that’s all I can say.”
The woman was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 4:34 p.m. Wednesday and subsequently released on a $5,000 bond.
A few days after the sexual assault was originally reported, the Clemson University Interfraternity Council (IFC) suspended all social events at fraternity houses effective immediately.
It is unknown if, and when, that suspension will be lifted.
The Tiger does not report the names of victims of sexual assault, including in cases in which the allegations are believed to be false. Names are not printed unless permission is granted by the victim.
This is not a court of law. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
