Original story
The Clemson University Fire Department (CUFD) and Ft. Hill Natural Gas are monitoring a gas leak near the Clemson campus.
According to the Clemson City Police Department, a gas leak from a main natural gas line on university property near Highway 76 was reported earlier this morning. A CU Safe Alert was sent out around 11 a.m. notifying students about the leak.
At this time, the exit ramp from Highway 76 onto Highway 93 is closed. The R-5 and R-6 parking lots are also closed until further notice. Officials say you should avoid the area and use alternative routes.
Officials say that if your car is in the R-5 or R-6 lots, you should not start it.
Clemson University Parking Services says that the East Park-N-Ride service to P-05 is on hold at this time. Parking Services says that East Park-N-Ride commuters coming to campus should park in C-1 until further notice; residents coming to campus should park on Kite Hill. Shuttles from the ASC/East Library are operational to get you back to your car in P-5 at this time, officials say.
Officials say repairs to the line are expected to take an extended period of time. CUFD Chief William Daniel says that residents may notice a strong gas odor throughout the city and outside the evacuated area.
