UPDATE (6/28/18 at 9:40 p.m.): Traffic barriers will be moved to the entrance of Mell Hall on Sunday, July 1, a day earlier than planned. Officials say that once the barricades have been moved, traffic moving eastbound on Highway 93 will not be able to reach College Avenue. Drivers will still be able to turn right onto Highway 93 from College Avenue. Officials warn that large trucks may have difficulty making the turn due to the reduced opening onto Highway 93.
Original Story
Clemson area drivers should continue to expect road closures and delays as construction along Highway 93 continues this summer.
Clemson University officials say that on Monday, June 25, traffic barriers on Highway 93 will be extended to the College Avenue intersection. As a result, traffic along Highway 93 will be one-way only between Cherry Road and College Avenue. Officials say that with these changes, traffic will not be able to travel towards Sherman Street from the College Avenue intersection. Instead, access to Sherman Street from Highway 93 will be “one-way in” traveling from the Cherry Road intersection and “one-way out” traveling towards the College Avenue intersection.
Beginning Monday, July 2, traffic barriers will be extended beyond the College Avenue intersection to Mell Hall. During this time, drivers will not be able to get to College Avenue if they’re traveling northbound on Highway 93. Instead, access to Sherman Street and College Avenue from Highway 93 will be “one-way in” traveling from the Cherry Road intersection and “one-way out” traveling towards the Williamson Road intersection.
Officials say there will be two nights, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., when Highway 93 will be completely closed. These dates have not yet been announced. Officials say the closures are needed to allow utilities to be installed across the road.
As a result of this construction, access to the E-11 (Mell Hall) parking lot will be impacted. Officials say that as work extends beyong the lot’s entrance, access to the lot will be left in, left out only. The lot will also have to close for one or two days in order to allow for some of the construction work; those dates have not yet been announced.
Officials say they are still on track to block access to Highway 93 from College Avenue during the second half of July.
These latest closures are part of continued construction along Highway 93 to upgrade the university’s electrical infrastructure and chilled water lines.
The Tiger will post updates about road closures on its website and social media channels as they are received.
Updates will also be posted on the Clemson University Facilities blog.
